Our little ones are always growing. Parents often wonder whether it is time to move their child into the next stage of car seat. But, when exactly is the right time to move them into a high backed booster? This is a tricky question, as there are several factors involved. Some children will meet certain criteria for a high backed booster long before they meet others. Try to ensure they have achieved all four of these criteria before moving them into a high backed booster. This will help you to make sure that they are as safe as possible whilst travelling in the car.

Here are some guidelines to help you identify when to make that transition from car seat with a 5 point harness, to seatbelt in a high backed booster for your child. To safely use a high backed booster seat your child needs to be:

High backed booster ready
  1. at least 15kg
  2. at least 4years old
  3. mature enough to sit calm & still in the high back booster. No leaning out or moving their arms under the seatbelt.
  4. Ideally they will have outgrown their previous seat. Keep them harnessed, preferably rear facing if your seat allows, until they have outgrown it. Usually that’s 18kg or 25kg but please check your individual seat. Some children also grow out of their car seat by height. So, keep an eye on the harness height being correct & their height in the actual seat too!

There are some very experienced people around in the car seat safety world. If you have questions about high backed boosters they will be able to help.
